Effect of estrogen on atherosclerotic lesions in various arterial segments of cholesterol-fed chicks.

چکیده
Until recently it was believed that atherosclerotic lesions of the aorta induced by hypercholesterolemia always faithfully reflected changes in other arteries. Thus intensive experimental analysis of factors reducing hypercholesterolemia and protecting the aorta against atherosclerosis were undertaken in the belief that such factors would also protect the coronary and other arteries against atherosclerotic lesions. However, it is now knowniM that after administration of estrogen coronary arteries differ in their behavior from that of aorta. While con siderable attention has been directed to atherosclerotic lesions of coronary arteries in experimental animals, cerebral arteries have received little at tention, in spite of the frequent incidence of cerebral vascular disease in man. In the present study on chicks I have examined the effect of cho lesterol feeding and hypercholesterolemia on the tendency to lipids infil tration and atherosclerotic changes in arteries of the brain, heart, kidney, lung, liver and spleen as well as of aorta. The effect of estrogen adminis tration on these vessels was also studied.

Regression of experimental atherosclerotic lesions in rhesus monkeys consuming a high saturated fat diet.
Atherosclerotic lesions were induced in rhesus monkeys by feeding them a high-fat, high-cholesterol diet for 2 years. Arteries were examined after autopsy of a subgroup of animals (group P) and cholesterol was removed from the diet of the remaining animals. Lesions were examined in other subgroups after 30 weeks (group R1) and after 52 weeks (group R2). A control group (group C) was fed the die...

AIM The aim of our work was to determine the influence of intestinal bacteria on the development of atherosclerotic lesions using apolipoprotein E (ApoE)-deficient knockout mice. METHODS The experiments were performed on ApoE-/--deficient mouse strain C57BL/6, bred under germ-free (GF) conditions for two generations or under conventional conditions with defined microflora (CV). The mice were ...
متن کاملEffect o Cholesterol Feelding and Pantethine Treatment ®on Complexes between Lipids and Arterial Connective Iissue Macromolecules in Specific Pathogen-Free Rabbits
The present study was designed to clarify the significance of complex formation of lipoproteins with extracellular connective tissue macromolecules during lipid accumulation in the arterial wall in SPF rabbits fed on a 0.5% cholesterol diet for six weeks. The effect of pantethine, a new hypolipidemic drug, on their complex formation and lipid accumulation was also studied. The levels of cholest...
متن کاملThe Effect of Estrogen on Endothelial Permeability of Aorta and the Level of Serum Nitrite Concentration in Cholesterol‑Fed Ovariectomized Rabbit
Estrogen Replacement Therapy (ERT) in postmenopausal women may decrease the risk of Coronary Artery Diseases (CAD). We hypothesized that Nitric Oxide (NO) releasing due to ERT may be the essential factor by which endothelial permeability decreases. Four groups of ovariectomized rabbits were under investigation for five weeks. Groups 1 & 4 received high cholesterol diet and other two groups (2 &...
متن کاملThe inhibition of coronary atherosclerosis by estrogens in cholesterol-fed chicks.
Chronic administration of estrogens parenterally inhibits coronary atherogenesis in cockerels fed a cholesterol-supplemented diet, although no such prophylactic effect was observed against aorta atherogenesis. This protection of the coronary vessels is associated with depression of the plasma total cholesterol-lipid phosphorus ratio toward normal levels consequent upon estrogen-induced hyperpho...
